SPAI in India: bridging the screen printing skill gap

We spoke to Mustafa Kapadia, President of the Screen Printers’ Association of India, about equipping print professionals with cutting-edge techniques.

The Screen Printers’ Association of India (SPAI) successfully conducted another edition of its signature learning initiative, “Print Ki Pathshala”, at the dedicated SPAI screen printing training centre in Mumbai.

This screen printing initiative was created in order to bridge the skill gap in the printing industry and provide a platform for continuous learning. SPAI recognised the need for hands-on training to address practical challenges and equip professionals with cutting-edge techniques and insights, ensuring they stay ahead in a competitive market. In all, 15 eager-to-learn printers from across Mumbai attended in December 2024.

Print Ki Pathshala aims to promote screen printing among students and to provide existing printers with advanced knowledge and skills. Held every year, the course lasts two days, including theory and practicals, and teaches basic screen-printing processes throughout.

In addition, industry experts share their insights and provide suggestions on various aspects of screen printing. Their expertise is invaluable in enhancing the learning experience and ensuring that students are well prepared for the industry.

The 2024 workshop was designed to address the practical challenges faced in the industry, covering an array of topics tailored to empower participants with innovative techniques, best practices and cutting-edge insights in the field of printing. Through interactive sessions, expert-led discussions and real-world problem-solving, participants gained valuable skills and strategies to improve their work.

This two-day course brought together a diverse group of participants, including printers, business owners and end-users, fostering a dynamic exchange of knowledge and experiences across the printing ecosystem.

On day 1, attendees were taught basic screen-printing theory (by Rajeev Gokhale), and practicals on mesh cleaning, making and exposing. On day 2, BG Vaidya taught a session on inks and coatings before students were taught practical lessons on screen printing.

Mustafa Kapadia, SPAI President, said: “It was surprising to discover that many participants were unfamiliar with several techniques for screen cleaning and exposing. The troubleshooting session proved to be very informative for many, highlighting areas for significant improvement.

“The participants were highly satisfied with the technical knowledge they gained and expressed their intent to send their colleagues and employees for future training sessions.”

What does the future hold for Print Ki Pathshala? Mustafa said: “Our next session will be on ‘Screen printing on Textile Printing and Transfer’ in February. This year, SPAI will also focus on promoting Print Ki Pathshala at the grassroots level, aiming to elevate industry standards and foster growth across the printing sector.

“We remain committed to nurturing young talent and driving innovation in the printing industry. Stay connected for updates on upcoming editions of Print Ki Pathshala and other initiatives aimed at empowering the printing fraternity.”
