FESPA in South Africa: the print skills to thrive

Printing SA’s Career Day inspired young Cape Town learners to explore printing and packaging careers.

A group of Grade 12 learners from Delft Technical High School were given a glimpse into the diverse career opportunities within the printing, packaging, signage and visual communication industries at a Career Day event in February this year. The initiative, hosted by Printing SA in partnership with Masterpack Cape Town and the Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD), sought to expose students to potential career paths in a dynamic and evolving sector.

Industry exposure for young minds

The event was the culmination of an earlier engagement in January, during which Printing SA representatives visited Delft Technical High School to introduce learners to the industry and outline various training and employment prospects. The school, located in Delft, Cape Town, has a strong focus on technical and vocational education, equipping students with industry-relevant skills. By connecting learners with real-world opportunities, the initiative aimed to bridge the gap between education and employment.

Masterpack Cape Town: a leading industry partner

Masterpack Cape Town, a prominent manufacturer of packaging solutions and a member of the Bidvest Group, played a pivotal role in the success of the Career Day. The company, known for its commitment to innovation and sustainability, welcomed the learners to its facilities, offering them first-hand insight into the packaging industry. Their involvement highlighted the importance of industry collaboration in nurturing future talent and ensuring continued sector growth.

Inspiring messages from industry leaders

Learners engaged enthusiastically with industry professionals throughout the day, gaining valuable career insights and guidance. A key highlight was a motivational speech by Frankie Mkhwemde from the DWYPD, who shared his personal journey of perseverance and success. His message resonated deeply, inspiring students to remain determined despite challenges.

Danielle Felix, Regional Manager of Printing SA’s Cape Chamber, further energised the learners with an uplifting talk on five key principles for positivity and success. Her words served as a roadmap for the students as they approach the crucial transition from school to the workforce.

Masterpack Cape Town ensured the event was both informative and engaging, creating a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged active participation. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the company’s representatives played a significant role in the day’s success.

Backing from key stakeholders

The Career Day was made possible through the support of FP&M Seta, FESPA, and the DWYPD. Their financial contributions covered transportation and other logistics, ensuring that learners had a memorable and enriching experience. Such backing is instrumental in providing students with exposure to career possibilities they may not have previously considered.

The event left a profound impact on the participating learners, with many expressing a keen interest in pursuing careers within the industry. Some attendees showed a strong desire to explore training and employment opportunities, demonstrating the success of the initiative in broadening their career horizons.

From an industry perspective, attracting young talent is crucial for sustainability and innovation. By engaging with schools and introducing students to career possibilities within printing and packaging, Printing SA and its partners are investing in the industry’s future. Initiatives like this not only cultivate a skilled workforce but also ensure that the sector remains vibrant and competitive.

Future initiatives

Building on the momentum of the Career Day, Printing SA aims to strengthen its collaboration with Masterpack Cape Town and Delft Technical High School. Future plans include structured mentorship programmes, internships, and potential holiday work placements, providing learners with hands-on experience in the industry.

Establishing a clear pipeline from school to employment will be crucial in ensuring long-term industry growth and youth empowerment. By continuing to invest in such initiatives, the printing, packaging, signage, and visual communication sectors can remain accessible and attractive to future generations.

The Career Day was a resounding success, inspiring learners, educators and industry stakeholders alike. Printing SA extends its gratitude to Masterpack Cape Town, DWYPD, and Delft Technical High School for their contributions. With ongoing collaboration, the industry can look forward to nurturing and equipping the next generation of professionals with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive.
