PressOn completes a Crossrail project

Wide format specialist PressOn has completed a programme of work for the Crossrail project.
The job required printing and installing 450m of hoarding graphics at construction sites throughout London, including at Bond Street, Paddington, Liverpool Street, Oxford Street, Moorgate, Farringdon, Custom House and Whitechapel stations.
Crossrail is building the Elizabeth Line, a new railway for London and the South East. The project is constructing 10 new stations, improving many more and connecting 42 kilometres of new tunnels under London with existing railways. Construction of the Crossrail project is 85% and is set to open in phases from December 2018.
The team at Crossrail enlisted PressOn’s services to assist with the implementation of a new site branding strategy. This strategy was to provide bespoke hoarding artwork for each individual station currently under construction across central London.
Hoarding graphics
PressOn produced the hoardings to be placed around the construction work for the new Elizabeth Line section of underground at Bond Street, Paddington, Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Farringdon, Custom House and Whitechapel stations.
Using the HP Latex 3500, PressOn printed the hoarding graphics with HP Latex inks onto permanent vinyl which was then mounted onto 3mm Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) panels. Printing took over 30 hours, laminating 8 hours and an additional 36 hours was spent mounting the vinyl to ACM.
Designs and all artwork was supplied by Crossrail and features CGI images of the proposed layout of the completed stations.
Health and Safety Considerations
PressOn consulted the project’s contractors at each individual worksite to identify the best methodology for installation. This involved meticulous planning to schedule installation around the construction programme, health and safety obligations, and other logistical complexities such as traffic and pedestrian management .

The importance of ink for large format printers
Ink is crucial for large format inkjet printers, influencing substrate compatibility, productivity, and cost. Nessan Cleary discusses the three main types which include UV-curable ink, latex ink and eco-solvent ink. Each ink type has specific strengths and weaknesses, making printers choice dependent on budget and intended applications.

What are the benefits of Direct-To-Fabric printing?
Direct-to-fabric printing is gaining popularity for high-volume textile production, enabling on-demand, customized short runs. These printers offer ink flexibility, accommodating various fabric types like cotton and silk, though ink development focuses on faster turnaround by reducing pre- and post-processing. Compared to traditional methods, direct-to-fabric inkjet printing is a more sustainable option due to reduced water and chemical usage, and localized production.

What are the opportunities for large format providers regarding digital touch screens?
Digital touchscreens are becoming increasingly common, offering businesses opportunities to improve customer engagement and streamline operations. Nessan Cleary shares, while more expensive to implement than standard digital displays due to complex software and integration needs, touchscreens provide self-service options, multilingual support, and can reduce staffing costs in various settings like retail, transportation, and healthcare.
